The Best Time to Visit Athens: Month by Month, from a Local Host

By •13 July 2026

A Kolonaki resident's month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Athens: real temperature normals, when the sea is warm, when the crowds come, what is on, and how to handle summer heat, fire closures and August.

Athens in soft spring light

Athens in soft spring light.

The short answer: the best time to visit Athens is from mid-April to early June and from mid-September to late October. In those weeks, average daytime highs range from about 21°C to 30°C. May, June and September are generally drier than April and October, and sightseeing is usually more comfortable than in high summer, especially in the morning. July and August average 34°C in the afternoon, with heatwaves that close the Acropolis at midday and fire-risk days that close Lycabettus Hill. Winter, November to March, is cool, greener and the quietest and cheapest time to come.

I have lived in Kolonaki for more than ten years and host guests in two apartments here, in every month of the year. This guide starts with a month-by-month table you can scan in a minute, then goes season by season with what I actually tell guests: what the weather is like on the ground, what is on, and what closes. It ends with the practical side, heat, fire risk and prices, and where to go next on the site.

Athens month by month

The temperatures below are the official 1991 to 2020 averages for central Athens from the National Observatory of Athens, measured at its historic station on the Hill of the Nymphs, about two kilometres from Kolonaki (NOA, "The new climate of Athens", 26 February 2021). The sea and crowd columns are my own experience of living here.

Month Avg high Avg low Rain days Sea Crowds What's on
January 13.3°C 7.1°C 13 Cold Lowest Winter sales, theatre and concert season
February 14.2°C 7.3°C 13 Cold Low Carnival (Apokries) weekends
March 17.0°C 9.2°C 11 Cold Low, rising Clean Monday kites; 25 March parade
April 21.1°C 12.3°C 10 Too cold for most Rising Open-air cinemas start opening; Easter some years

August 34.3°C 24.4°C 2 Warmest Busy at the sites, empty in the neighbourhoods 15 August holiday; local closures; fire-risk days
September 29.6°C 20.4°C 3 Still warm High, easing late Lycabettus Theatre autumn season
October 24.3°C 16.2°C 9 Mild early in the month Moderate 28 October parade; theatre season reopens
November 18.9°C 12.2°C 11 Cold Low Athens Marathon (8 November 2026)
December 14.4°C 8.7°C 13 Cold Low, busier at Christmas Christmas lights in Syntagma

Temperatures: NOA, 1991 to 2020 averages. Rain days: NOA's earlier 1961 to 1990 table (IERSD, National Observatory of Athens), the most recent monthly count it publishes. Event dates checked 11 October 2026.

Two things the table does not show. First, Athens is getting hotter: the NOA puts the 1991 to 2020 annual mean at about 18.5°C, almost a degree above 1961 to 1990, with August up by close to 2°C. Second, an average high of 34°C hides the heatwave days. July 2024 was the warmest July for night-time temperatures in Athens since records began in the 19th century, with a mean minimum of 27.6°C (NOA, 2 August 2024). For the forecast on your dates, I use meteo.gr for Athens centre, run by the National Observatory.

Season by season

Spring: my first pick (mid-April to early June)

Spring is when Athens looks its best. The light is soft, the pines on Lycabettus are green, and the marble at the ancient sites is warm underfoot without being scorching. You can spend a whole day walking the historic centre and still want to be out in the evening. The open-air cinemas begin to open, which is one of the great pleasures of this city: in 2026 Cine Thisio, under the Acropolis, opened on 23 April (Parapolitika).

Crowds build steadily through May, and Greek Orthodox Easter is a real turning point. In 2027 it falls on 2 May, with Good Friday on 30 April and Easter Monday a public holiday on 3 May (timeanddate, Greek holidays 2027). Here is the local twist: many Athenians leave for their family villages over Easter, so the city itself is calmer than you might expect, while visitor numbers at the sites are high. Book early if your dates touch Easter week, and expect some shops and restaurants to close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

This is the season I would point a first-timer to for a short trip. Our two to three day Athens itinerary works at its best in May.

Summer: come prepared (June to August)

The Acropolis under a clear blue sky, Athens

The Acropolis under a clear blue sky, Athens.

I won't oversell summer, and I won't scare you off it either. June is lovely: long evenings, the sea is warm, and the Athens Epidaurus Festival is under way. In 2026 its programme opened at Peiraios 260 on 29 May, the ancient theatre of Epidaurus opened on 20 June and the season there closed with Lysistrata on 21 and 22 August (Athens Voice, 29 April 2026). The Odeon of Herodes Atticus held farewell performances in June 2026 before closing for restoration; check the festival's current venues before planning around a show.

July and August are seriously hot in the middle of the day. The way to enjoy them is simple and local: be at the Acropolis when it opens in the morning, retreat indoors or to a shaded café in the early afternoon, and come back out when the city cools at dusk. In the evening the open-air cinemas are at their best; in Kolonaki itself, Cine Dexameni on Dexameni Square was screening nightly at 20:50 and 23:00 in late July 2026. Air conditioning matters more than any other amenity in these months, which is one reason every space we host has it.

Heatwaves and the Acropolis

On heatwave days the Ministry of Culture closes the Acropolis in the hottest hours. It closed from 12:00 to 17:00 on 17 July 2024 (Ta Nea) and from 13:00 to 17:00 on 8 July 2025 (Alfavita). If you are visiting in July or August, book an early morning slot, and if a heatwave is forecast, check the news the evening before.

August: quiet where locals live

August has a quirk worth knowing. Many Athenians leave for the islands and the coast, especially in the weeks around the 15 August holiday, so residential neighbourhoods like ours go quiet and some independent shops, tailors and family tavernas close for a week or two, usually with a handwritten note on the door. The sites and the tourist core, meanwhile, stay busy. So August is calm where locals live and crowded where visitors go, which can suit you very well if you want a peaceful base a short walk from the sights. Just do not set your heart on one particular small restaurant without checking it is open.

Autumn: the other best pick (mid-September to October)

Panoramic view of the Athens cityscape with Lycabettus Hill

Panoramic view of the Athens cityscape with Lycabettus Hill.

Autumn is spring's equal, and for some travellers it edges ahead. September still averages almost 30°C in the afternoon and the sea is still about as warm as it gets, but the fierce midday heat eases and the August crowds thin out in the second half of the month. The Lycabettus Theatre runs an autumn season too; in 2026 it ran from 30 August to 5 October (City of Athens).

October is one of my favourite months to be here: comfortable walking weather, long golden light in the late afternoon, and a city that has settled back into its own rhythm. The first autumn rains usually arrive during the month, with a few grey days. On 28 October, Ochi Day, there is a school parade in the centre and it is a public holiday.

Winter: quiet, cool and good value (November to March)

Athens winters are mild by northern European standards but genuinely cool, with average highs of about 13°C to 14°C from December to February and around 13 rain days a month. Between the grey stretches there are plenty of bright, crisp days when the views from the hills are at their sharpest. In early November the Athens Authentic Marathon runs from Marathon into the Panathenaic Stadium; the 2026 race is on 8 November, so expect road closures in the centre that morning.

This is the season for the indoor city, and Kolonaki is its museum quarter: the Benaki Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art are both within about ten minutes' walk of our apartments. It is also the season of theatre, concerts and long lunches, and archaeological sites you can enjoy almost to yourself. In December, Syntagma Square is lit up for Christmas.

March brings Carnival weekends and Clean Monday, when Athenians fly kites on Filopappou Hill and eat Lenten food outdoors; in 2027 it is on 15 March. On 25 March, Independence Day, there is a military parade in the centre and the roads around Syntagma close for the morning. Pack a warm layer and something waterproof and you will be fine.

Planning around heat, fire and prices

Summer fire-risk closures on Lycabettus

Lycabettus, the pine-covered hill above Kolonaki, is closed by the City of Athens on days of extreme fire risk, to pedestrians and vehicles alike. On 1 August 2026, with Attica at category 5 (a state of alert), the city shut Lycabettus and Finopoulou Hill from midnight until further notice (SKAI, 31 July 2026), and it did the same at the end of June 2025 (Proto Thema, 28 June 2025).

Between June and September, look at the Civil Protection fire risk map the evening before you plan a sunset on the hill. If Attica shows category 4 or 5, have a backup. Our Lycabettus guide has the funicular times, sunset times by month and the alternatives.

Getting around in the heat

At midday in July and August, a taxi beats a 20 minute uphill walk. Taxis in Athens are yellow and licensed, and the easiest way to get one is through a ride app that takes your card:

App What it books iPhone Android
Uber Licensed taxis (in Greece) iPhone Android
Bolt A ride iPhone Android
FREENOW by Lyft Licensed taxis iPhone Android
Lemon Licensed taxis iPhone Android

To phone for one instead: Parthenon +30 210 532 3300 or Kosmos +30 210 411 8300 (both can be called from a foreign phone). Kosmos also has the short number 18300, from a Greek mobile. Between the airport and the centre, taxis charge a flat fare, per car, of €50 by day and €65 at night (00:00 to 05:00), in force since 18 September 2026. Taxis are required by law to accept cards, but ask before you get in. For the metro, including the line 3 trains to the airport from Syntagma and Evangelismos, see our getting around Athens guide.

How the seasons affect price

Nightly rates across Athens broadly track demand: highest in July and around Easter, softer in the shoulder months, lowest from November to March. Booking well ahead for May, June, September and early October is worth it, because those weeks fill with travellers who, like me, think they are the sweet spot. Late August can be good value too, once the Greek holidays wind down.

So, when should you come?

If you want my one-line answer: aim for mid-April to early June or mid-September to late October, and you will get the version of Athens I most want you to see. Choose high summer if that is when you can travel, and build your days around the heat. Choose winter if you value quiet, museums and price over warmth. For a neighbourhood that stays calm in every season, the story of Kolonaki and its interactive map is a good place to start.

Where to go next

Staying with us

Both of our apartments are air-conditioned, which matters most in July and August. The two-bedroom near Evangelismos, on the flat lower side of Kolonaki by the metro, suits families and longer winter stays; the one-bedroom on Deinokratous is about 100 metres from the Lycabettus funicular. When your dates are fixed, see both apartments or book direct, and I will tell you what is on during your stay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Athens?
May and October are hard to beat. According to the National Observatory of Athens 1991 to 2020 averages, central Athens has average highs of 26.5°C in May and 24.3°C in October, with little rain, comfortable walking weather and thinner crowds than in July and August. Mid-April to early June and mid-September to late October are the two sweet spots.
How hot is Athens in July and August?
Very hot. The 1991 to 2020 average daily high in central Athens is 34.3°C in both July and August, with average lows above 24°C, and heatwaves push well beyond that. July 2024 was the warmest July on record for night-time temperatures in Athens. Plan sightseeing for early morning and evening, and rest indoors in the early afternoon.
Does the Acropolis close in a heatwave?
Yes. On heatwave days the Greek Ministry of Culture closes the Acropolis during the hottest hours, for example from 12:00 to 17:00 on 17 July 2024 and from 13:00 to 17:00 on 8 July 2025. If you visit in July or August, book an early morning entry and check the news the evening before if a heatwave is forecast.
Is August a good time to visit Athens?
August works if you plan around the heat, but it has a split personality. It is the hottest month, many Athenians leave the city around the 15 August holiday, and some independent shops and family tavernas close for a week or two. The Acropolis and the tourist core stay busy, while residential neighbourhoods such as Kolonaki are quiet.
Is Lycabettus Hill open in summer?
Usually, but the City of Athens closes Lycabettus to pedestrians and vehicles on days of extreme fire risk, as it did from midnight on 1 August 2026 and at the end of June 2025. Between June and September, check the Civil Protection fire risk map for Attica the evening before you plan to go.
When is the sea warm enough to swim near Athens?
Athenians generally swim from late May or June until early October. The sea is warmest in August and September, and many locals keep swimming into the first part of October. From November to April the water is too cold for most visitors.
What is the cheapest time to visit Athens?
November to March, outside Christmas and the Carnival weekends, is the lowest-demand and lowest-price season in Athens. Expect average highs of 13°C to 19°C, some rain, near-empty museums and archaeological sites, and the theatre and concert season in full swing.
When is Greek Easter in 2027?
Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027, with Good Friday on 30 April and Easter Monday, a public holiday, on 3 May. Many Athenians leave for their villages, so the city is calmer, but some shops and restaurants close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Book early if your trip touches Easter week.
